Temperature

The press plate temperature affects how the adhesive bonds to the fabric. Lower for heat-sensitive fabrics like polyester and silk. Higher for dense fabrics like thick cotton or wool.

Over-temperature is a leading cause of garment damage and adhesive failure.

PSI / bar

Pressure

Consistent pressure across the full transfer area ensures complete adhesive activation. Uneven pressure produces inconsistent bonding — visible as partial lift after peeling.

Under-pressure produces weak adhesion. Over-pressure can crush pile fabrics.

Seconds

Dwell time

The duration the press remains closed. Longer dwell allows heat to penetrate through thicker fabrics. Too short produces incomplete bonding. Too long over-heats the material.

Dwell time and temperature interact — adjust both together when changing fabrics.

Transferring settings between fabrics

Settings approved on cotton do not apply to polyester, nylon, or any other fabric. Each substrate requires its own confirmed settings before production.

Assuming the same peel method

Hot peel and cold peel are transfer-specific. Using the wrong method lifts stones before adhesion is complete or damages the carrier film. Follow the supplier guide.

Skipping the test on the actual garment

Testing on a fabric swatch is not sufficient. The full garment construction — seams, linings, and bulk — affects heat distribution and adhesion in ways a flat swatch does not.

Using estimated settings from general guides

Online guides, including this one, provide directional information only. The only valid production setting is the one confirmed in the supplier-approved application guide for your specific transfer.

There are no universal standard settings. Rhinestone transfer application settings — temperature, pressure, and time — vary by transfer type, adhesive system, fabric content, fabric weight, and equipment. Why do rhinestone application settings differ from garment to garment?

Fabric content, weight, and finish all affect how heat distributes through the garment and reaches the adhesive. Polyester requires lower temperatures than cotton. Thick fleece requires longer dwell time. Treated or coated surfaces behave differently than untreated ones. Settings approved on one fabric are not transferable to a different fabric.

What happens if the heat-press temperature is too high for rhinestone application?

Over-application can discolor the garment, cause the transfer adhesive to bond incorrectly, damage heat-sensitive fabrics, or change the stone appearance. These results are often permanent and not correctable. This is why every new fabric type requires a test application before any production quantity is confirmed.

Should a cold peel or hot peel be used for rhinestone transfers?

The peel method — hot or cold — is specified by the transfer supplier for the approved construction. Do not assume that the same peel method applies to different transfer types or suppliers.
