Pack specification

Private-Label Merchandise Packaging: Specify the Handoff

Design accessory packaging around protection, identity, count accuracy, and receiving checks.

Buyer perspective

Packaging is part of the delivered product, not a decorative afterthought. A beautiful card may fail to protect a loose rhinestone item, while a protective bag may not carry the barcode or variant identity a retailer needs. Buyers should specify the pack from the product outward and approve a complete packed sample.

What to decide

Build a brief that can be tested

Buyer worksheet

  1. 01

    Protect the item

Identify surfaces that can scratch, crease, snag, shed stones, or deform. Decide how one unit is restrained and separated from its neighbors. Test the pack using the actual item and handling path; a flat artwork proof cannot show whether the accessory moves in transit.

  2. 02

    Control identity

Define SKU, color, size, country-specific copy where applicable, brand art revision, barcode owner, and placement on the inner and outer pack. Ask who checks that the physical item matches the printed identity before sealing.

  3. 03

    Plan receipt

Record units per inner and master carton, carton marks, mixed-variant rules, and photographs of the packed condition. Confirm who provides packaging components and approves proofs. Leave legal labeling requirements to the responsible destination-market reviewer.

Approval gate

Sign off a packed unit, not only a dieline

Packaging artwork and packaging performance are separate approvals. Put the real accessory inside the proposed components and check what a receiver would identify without opening the wrong variant.

  • Protection

Inspect restraint, surface contact, moisture considerations, and whether decorative elements rub against neighboring units.

  • Identity

Scan or read SKU, color, size, and brand copy against the physical contents and approved artwork revision.

  • Distribution

Open a representative master carton and verify counts, separation, marks, and the receiving sequence.

Retain a sealed approved pack and carton photograph; a revised card or insert should return to the identity check.
