Buyer perspective
A single lead-time number is easy to quote and easy to misunderstand. A custom product can wait for artwork approval, material confirmation, a physical sample, production space, or a freight decision. Buyers should ask which gate a quoted duration begins at and what must remain unchanged for it to hold.
Specification
Instead of asking only “how many days,” put the buyer's approval windows and the maker's production steps on a shared calendar. Separate elapsed time from work performed so a delayed response is visible.
A schedule becomes actionable when both parties know which approval unlocks the next step and what date has actually been confirmed.
What to decide
Ask whether timing begins with inquiry, deposit, approved artwork, accepted sample, or receipt of production material. Record the revision and quantity assumed. A date discussed before a sample is approved should not be treated as a committed dispatch date.
Separate tooling or setup, sample transit, buyer review, production, inspection, packing, and carrier collection. Identify owner and decision deadline for each. Ask which materials or colorways constrain capacity and whether split delivery is feasible for the actual order.
A new graphic, size mix, backing, pack configuration, or destination can alter the path. Request an updated written schedule after approval and before promising a retail launch. Leave buffer for the buyer's own review and inbound checks.
