Embroidered Patch Sizing for Apparel Programs

Set embroidered patch size with actual-size artwork, garment panels, readable details, and size-range placement trials.

Buyer perspective

A patch dimension should be chosen on the garment, not from a zoomed artwork file. The smallest readable word, available panel, and desired visual role can each impose a different limit. Record the finished width and height of the complete patch, including its visible edge, before approving embroidery.

Measure the patch as the wearer will see it

Create a dimension sheet with a clear outer boundary and a separate artwork field. An irregular patch needs a stated method for width and height, otherwise two suppliers can quote different constructions while using the same nominal number.

Outer envelope: Mark the furthest finished edge in each direction and keep a real-size outline beside the dimension values.
Detail threshold: Identify the smallest lettering or icon that must remain readable after embroidery and edge finishing; examine it on a sample.
Panel fit: Record clearance from seams and pockets on the smallest garment size as well as the appearance on the largest.

If one patch size cannot satisfy both detail and panel fit, approve named variants rather than an undocumented mid-order resize.

Build a brief that can be tested

Print artwork at real scale

Make paper versions of the proposed sizes and place them where the patch will be worn. Review tiny lettering, narrow gaps, and the balance between border and center design. Enlarging only the logo on screen conceals these tradeoffs.

Check the garment range

Try the same paper proof on the smallest and largest planned garment sizes. Note nearby seams, pockets, curved panels, and whether a fixed patch size looks proportionate across the range. If it does not, create clearly labeled size variants rather than an undocumented adjustment.

State how size is measured

Specify whether dimensions refer to the embroidered field, outer edge, or an irregular silhouette's widest points. Request a finished sample and measure it using the same method. Save the approved dimension, artwork version, and placement diagram together.
