Choose a patch edge by finished outline, artwork clearance, attachment plan, and a physical garment sample.
Buyer perspective
The edge of an embroidered patch is part of the design, not a trim to select after the artwork is approved. A border can change the visible silhouette and crowd small lettering. Start with the final outline and the garment location, then ask the maker to propose an edge that can be repeated on that shape.
Options
Request more than an edge name. The maker should return actual-size proposals that show where stitching travels around the requested silhouette, how much base remains visible, and where protected artwork sits relative to the edge.
Compare pointed and recessed corners for shape loss or crowding; mark each place where the approved outline must remain recognizable.
Check the smallest lettering and nearby motifs against each proposed border on a physical-size proof, not an enlarged display.
Pair the selected visible edge with a separately confirmed backing and garment attachment trial; the face photograph cannot identify the reverse.
Keep the rejected edge versions in the approval record so a reorder cannot silently substitute an attractive but untested finish.
What to decide
Field folio 01
Mark corners, notches, narrow joins, and any intentional open space on an actual-size outline. Keep important lettering away from the proposed stitch path. A rectangular preview will not show what happens to a complicated edge when it is cut and sewn.
Field folio 02
Approve thread colors, exposed base, and edge appearance on the front. Document backing and attachment separately on the reverse. A photograph of a neat border does not prove that the patch will attach appropriately to a particular fabric.
Field folio 03
Place the completed patch at its measured position on the intended shirt or jacket. Check the full circumference, especially tight turns, then inspect from ordinary viewing distance. Keep the accepted physical sample and outline revision together for reorders.
