Both products may be applied with heat, yet they leave very different marks. A transfer reads as decoration directly on the fabric; a patch brings its own base and perimeter. The choice should begin with the look and feel of the finished garment.
What to decide
A patch can create a deliberate badge silhouette and may support a textured design. A transfer avoids that surrounding textile. Compare both on the actual garment color, because an unwanted base halo is difficult to judge on a white background.
Check how the decorated area bends and stretches in wear. A constructed badge may feel too stiff for a light knit, while a loose motif may not give the defined edge desired on a bag or jacket.
Do not infer adhesion from the word iron-on. Apply samples using the intended equipment and inspect after cooling and relevant care. Keep the tested fabric and placement in the specification.
Options
An iron-on transfer places the graphic directly on the item, while an iron-on patch brings its own fabric-like base and edge. That difference changes the silhouette, thickness, and way the result moves with a garment. Compare finished samples at the same size and location before choosing by a product photo alone.

Flex the decorated area to see how the added base or transferred graphic follows the garment.
Test each candidate on the exact fabric and note seams or texture inside the application area.
