Buyer perspective
A sock has limited space for branding and changes shape substantially between a flat table and a worn foot. A neat label on a rigid test swatch says little about comfort or legibility in use. Start with the exact sock construction, its size range, and the location where a mark can remain visible without interrupting wear.
Specification
Sock branding has little room for guesswork. Make one worksheet that relates the mark's dimensions to the usable knit area and the required text at both rest and representative stretch.
If one label scale cannot work across the range, specify a separate approved version rather than allowing the decorator to resize it informally.
What to decide
Identify cuff, sole, or other proposed zones and note seams, ribbing, compression areas, and contact with footwear. Put the artwork at real size on the sock. Review how it looks both unstretched and at a representative worn stretch rather than assuming a flat photograph is enough.
Provide the actual yarn blend and finish where known, plus the planned care method. Ask the decorator to apply a sample using the proposed production process. Check hand feel, edge behavior, and whether the mark remains readable after the agreed wear and wash observations.
Document whether one physical label size works across the assortment. If youth and adult socks need different scale or placement, treat them as separate approved items. Keep the sample, artwork revision, and sock SKU associated with each order line.
