Heat-Press Transfers Near Seams and Zippers

Plan transfer placement around raised garment construction using flat-area checks, trial application, and clear acceptance criteria.

Buyer perspective

A transfer needs a usable contact area. Raised seams, zipper tape, pockets, and closures can interrupt the pressure and position available to a decorator. Instead of assuming the center point on a mockup is workable, map the actual assembled garment and decide whether the design or location must move.

What to decide

Build a brief that can be tested

Measure the available panel

Mark the finished transfer outline on the garment. Record distances from raised construction and check whether the full design lies on a surface that can be supported. Inspect the panel across the planned size range, not just one showroom sample.

Trial the real application

Ask the decorator to use the production garment, equipment, and any support they propose. Document the method used to keep hardware or seams away from the pressing area. Inspect alignment, coverage, and edge attachment after the agreed care test.

Approve a reproducible location

Save a placement diagram with measured reference points and a photo of the accepted garment. If a style revision moves a seam or pocket, reassess the transfer. The earlier setting and position should not be treated as universal.

Record a clear pressing window

A placement sheet should show more than a centerline. Transfer dimensions and the distance to nearby hardware or raised construction define the working area the decorator must actually support during application.

Available surface: Mark the full transfer envelope and measure its clearance from zipper teeth, seam allowances, pocket edges, and other raised features.
Size variation: Repeat the map on the smallest and largest planned garment sizes because seam and pocket positions may not scale uniformly.
Accepted result: Attach photographs of the pressed sample and record any support method and inspected edges for that exact garment.

If the panel cannot provide consistent contact, change location or decoration before a production run rather than hiding the constraint in a press setting.
